2011 Summer Camp at the Greater Wildwood Yacht
Club
- Introduction
-
The Greater Wildwood Yacht Club (GWYC) located at Park Avenue and
Forget Me Not Road in Wildwood Crest offers a summer camp for
children ages 8 to 15. The summer camp will operate from Monday,
June 27, 2011 to Friday, August 12, 2011 from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M.
Activities include arts and crafts, swimming, kayaking and sailing.
All students are required to bring a life jacket, sunscreen, sandals
or water-shoes and lunch to summer camp each day. Students are
required to wear their life jackets when on the docks or on the
water. Registration, medical and liability releases must be
completed by a student's parent/guardian on an annual basis.
Students may not attend classes until all forms are completed.
- Sailing
-
Sailing is a major part of the GWYC summer camp where we teach an
entire "learn to sail" program including: safety on the
water, parts of a sail boat, how sailboats sail, wind awareness,
points of sail, sailing a course, racing, righting a capsized boat,
knots and lines, etc. The GWYC is a member of the Mid Atlantic Yacht
Racing Association (MAYRA) which includes yacht clubs in Cape May,
Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle, Brigantine and the Philadelphia
area. Our sailing instructors are trained and certified by the US
Sailing Association. Beginning sailors are instructed on club owned
Optimist and Sunfish sailboats. Sailors who return for a second year
are encouraged but not required to have their own boat. All sailors
will be required to pass a GWYC swim test prior to sailing on Sunset
Lake.
- Camp Fees
for GWYC members:
-
First child in family $400
-
Each additional child $350
-
$100 discount for sailors who own a boat
- Membership is open to everyone
-
- Optimist vs. Sunfish
-
The use of an Optimist or a Sunfish sail boat is based on a
combination of three factors: age, weight and experience. Usually an
Optimist is no longer used after two of experience, or when a sailor
weighs more than 90 pounds or is older than 12 years old.
